As estheticians, we often know a client is pregnant even before their significant other, family or friends. Our safe space is just the place where clients feel comfortable and are eager to tell someone the exciting news. But is pregnancy a contraindication to waxing? No. But pregnancy brings with it a series of physical and hormonal changes that may affect a woman’s skin, sensitivity, and overall waxing experience. As an esthetician, it’s essential to approach waxing a pregnant woman with the utmost care and professionalism. The goal is to ensure the client feels safe, comfortable, and relaxed throughout the process while minimizing any discomfort. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to professionally wax a pregnant woman, while considering her specific needs and concerns. Of course, require a doctor’s note if you are hesitant to move forward with the waxing service.
Perform a thorough Consultation
The first step in waxing any client is to establish open communication, and this becomes even more important when working with a pregnant woman. Before the procedure, ask about any health concerns or special instructions from her healthcare provider. Keep in mind that pregnancy can cause increased skin sensitivity, hormonal fluctuations, or even varicose veins, so it’s important to be aware of any areas that may require special attention.
Choose the Right Wax
Pregnant women can have more sensitive skin due to hormonal changes and increased blood volume, so it’s crucial to choose a wax that will be gentle yet effective. Opt for wax that is designed for sensitive skin, a stripless hard wax is ideal for delicate areas like the bikini line or underarms. Cirepil by Perron Rigot Cristalline is a great choice. It’s unscented, gluten free and vegan. Like all Perron Rigot products, Cirepil Cristalline is also cruelty free and paraben free.
Additionally, avoid using waxes with fragrances, dyes, or harsh chemicals, as these can potentially irritate sensitive skin. Ensure the wax is at the right temperature—not hot.
Check for Contraindications
Pregnancy often causes changes in the skin’s elasticity, texture, and sensitivity. Some women experience conditions like melasma, varicose veins, or even stretch marks, which require special attention during waxing along with a decision to wax or not. Perform a patch test to check for any reactions or irritation before beginning the full treatment.
Positioning for Comfort
Positioning is crucial when waxing a pregnant woman. As the pregnancy progresses, certain positions might become uncomfortable, especially for women who are in their second or third trimester. Make sure the client is comfortable and can relax during the session. Adjust the waxing table to provide proper support and offer pillows or cushions to support the back and belly. The head should be elevated above the heart. For any waxing area that requires the client to lay on their stomach, like a leg wax or Brazilian wax, they can lay on their side as an alternative.
Apply Soothing Products Post-Waxing
After the waxing session, apply a soothing lotion or gel to help calm and hydrate the skin. Choose products that are safe for pregnancy, such as aloe vera, which can reduce redness and irritation. Avoid products containing alcohol or strong fragrances, as these can cause further irritation to sensitive skin. Cirepil by Perron Rigot Post Refreshing Gel is the perfect post wax product to calm the skin.
Waxing during pregnancy requires a delicate balance of professionalism, sensitivity, and skill. By choosing the right products, communicating openly, maintaining a clean and comfortable environment, and being attentive to her unique needs, you can provide a positive waxing experience. Pregnancy is a special time, and your role as an esthetician is to ensure that your client feels pampered, relaxed, and well taken care of while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and care.
