Winter brings its own set of challenges when it comes to waxing clients. Cold, dry air can leave skin feeling parched and sensitive, making it essential to adjust your waxing technique to keep the skin hydrated and protected. Whether you’re working with soft or hard wax, a little extra care will ensure your clients leave your treatment room with smooth, happy skin, even in the colder months. Here are the key tips for waxing clients in winter, focusing on skin hydration, preparation, and post-care.
Pre-Wax Oil is a Must
Before even considering the wax, one of the first steps in preparing your client’s skin for a smooth waxing session is to apply a pre-wax oil. In winter, skin tends to be drier and more prone to irritation. Pre-wax oil creates a barrier between the skin and the wax, which helps to protect the skin from excessive irritation and makes the waxing process more comfortable for your client. The oil also helps the wax adhere better to the hair rather than to the skin, reducing the risk of redness and discomfort. Look for a pre-wax oil that contains soothing ingredients, the Cirépil Pre & Post Depilatory Oil is the best option. But a little goes a long way, just one drop is all you need, and be sure to wipe the area after applying the oil to remove excess oil. Winter dryness can lead to a problem when using soft or strip wax. If the skin is too dry, the wax may stick to the skin after the paper is removed, causing unnecessary discomfort and potential skin irritation. Even hard wax, which is generally gentler on the skin, might become difficult to remove if the skin is overly dry. Another key reason to use a pre-wax oil.
Exfoliating Before the Appointment
Exfoliation is essential, especially in winter when dry skin can cause a buildup of dead skin cells. Encouraging your clients to exfoliate 24-48 hours before their waxing appointment will not only help the wax adhere more effectively to the hair but will also ensure smoother results. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells; this will bring hair closer to the surface, create a cleaner waxing result and leave the skin looking radiant after waxing. However, make sure to remind your clients not to exfoliate too close to the appointment time, as freshly exfoliated skin can be more sensitive to waxing. A dry brush or exfoliating scrub works great.
Hydrating Wax with Coconut Oil
When choosing which wax is ideal for your client, look for a formula that hydrates the skin when it comes to dry skin in the winter. Wax with coconut oil is a great option because it not only helps the wax to glide on more smoothly but also nourishes and hydrates the skin during the treatment. Coconut oil is naturally moisturizing and can help replenish some of the skin’s lost moisture. Cirépil by Perron Rigot Boudoir is the perfect option. Hard wax with coconut oil provides a gentle application and removal, making them perfect for clients with sensitive skin that’s been affected by the harsh winter air.
Watch for Winter Skin Conditions: Eczema
Winter can bring flare-ups of eczema and other skin conditions, which are important to consider before waxing. Eczema often becomes more pronounced in colder months, leaving skin red, dry, and irritated. Waxing eczema-prone skin can cause the skin to lift, leading to additional irritation and potential scarring. Be sure to assess your client’s skin carefully before proceeding with a waxing treatment. If you notice any patches of eczema or other inflamed skin, it’s best to recommend postponing the wax until the skin is calmer and better prepared. Always prioritize your client’s skin health and avoid waxing areas with active eczema flare-ups.
Waxing clients during the winter months requires a bit of extra care, but with the right techniques, it can be just as smooth and effective as any other season. By using a pre-wax oil to protect the skin, advising clients to exfoliate beforehand, and choosing a hydrating wax like one infused with coconut oil you’ll be able to keep your clients’ skin happy and healthy. And remember, always stay vigilant for any skin conditions like eczema that could be contraindications for waxing. With these tips, your clients will leave your treatment room with not only smooth but well-hydrated and glowing skin—no matter how cold it gets outside!
