A histamine response is a common reaction to waxing, particularly in people with sensitive skin. When hair is removed from the follicle during waxing, the body recognizes this as a minor injury or irritation, prompting the release of histamines. Histamines are chemicals produced by the immune system that cause blood vessels to expand and the skin to become red and inflamed.
Here are some key points about a histamine response with waxing:
Symptoms:
The primary symptoms include redness, swelling, itching, and small bumps or hives in the waxed area. These symptoms can appear immediately after waxing or within a few hours. Allergic response differs from histamine reactions.
Duration:
The reaction is usually temporary and can last from minutes to a few hours to a couple of days, depending on the individual’s skin sensitivity and the area waxed.
Prevention:
Taking an over-the-counter antihistamine like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or Claritin (loratadine) an hour before waxing can help prevent histamine reactions for people who have a very strong reaction. For most people, applying an antihistamine product will do the trick.
Gently exfoliate the skin for a day or two before waxing to remove dead skin cells and reduce the likelihood of ingrown hairs.
Pre-waxing preparation is important. Ensure the skin is clean and dry and prepared properly for the waxing process. Perform a patch test on a small area of skin to check for any adverse reactions before waxing.
Use gentle wax:
Opt for high-quality, gentle waxes formulated for sensitive skin like Cirépil Cristalline. It is unscented and vegan which also aids in preventing reactions. It works great for eyebrows because it is applied thin and remains flexible!
Aftercare:
Applying a cold compress or beauty globes to the waxed area can help reduce redness and swelling followed by proper aftercare. Over-the-counter topical antihistamines can help alleviate itching and reduce the histamine response. Apply soothing products like aloe vera gel, hydrocortisone cream, or other soothing products to calm the skin.
Post Waxing:
Be sure to exfoliate and hydrate the skin to promote healthy healing.
Avoid heat an sweating for at least 24 hours.
If the histamine response is severe or persistent, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional to rule out any other underlying conditions or allergies.
